From a little patch of dirt surrounded by a parking lot to a fire escape overlooking the downtown – yes, you can grow food anywhere.
Last year I wrote about the little garden (which is growing strong again this year) at Bruce Bennett Nissan. This year I wanted to share with you a fantastic container garden setup that my friend Amanda has on her downtown Danbury apartment fire escape.
She’s growing lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, peas and a few other things too. One year she even grew a few baby-sized watermelons. Her advice – where ever you live, get a pot, some dirt and a plant, then just go for it.
She’s been growing on her fire escape for about three years. Sometimes it’s a bit trial and error but if one plant doesn’t work, that’s OK. She’ll try something else next year.
Thanks Amanda for not only showing us your garden, but for the amazing bag of lettuce. It was delicious.
Even if it’s a window box full of herbs, I say just do it.
Do you have a garden in a unexpected place? What are you growing this year?
