Many years ago I did a video about Urban Oaks Farm. The farm is located in the center of New Britain, CT. As soon as I stepped onto the property I was transported from a world of urban decay to a world filled with nature’s bounty.
Urban Oaks is an oasis that provides healthy, fresh organic foods to a community that, without the farm, would be considered a food desert. This oasis now needs our help.
As it says on the GoFundMe page: “After a wonderful fifteen year relationship with a phenomenally generous landlord, the land will be put up for sale next spring. Our best hope to save our certified organic farm is to buy the land ourselves, but we do not have the resources … The affirmative role of the farm in the neighborhood cannot be overstated. We want to stay where we are and keep our mission going. We need your help.”
Urban Oaks is a certified organic farm that sits on 3.5 acres, has seven on-site greenhouses, runs a year-round on-site farmers’ market, has a grant-provided mobile market that visits neighborhood sites, and offers a variety of educational programs with local public schools.
The goal is to raise $285,000 to buy the farm. As of Nov. 14th they had raised a little over $11,000. It seems a like daunting dollar amount, but well, I have to believe if we all contribute something, no matter how small, we can help them meet their goal.
