Now this is my kind of “holiday”: World Kitchen Garden Day is August 22nd.
Kitchen Gardener’s International started this worldwide event back in 2003 and it’s become an annual celebration of food produced on a human-scale. It’s a chance for people to get together with their friends and family to celebrate homegrown, handmade foods.
I see it as a great excuse to have a summer party, to eat great food and maybe even to generate casual conversation about food and food production. Plus, what a fun way to show off your garden!
I’ll be at a birthday party that day, so I’ll just have to bring something special from my garden to add to the menu.
Here’s to World Kitchen Garden Day! Buon Appetito!
Hooray! This does seem like a great day, and especially because of the way it recognizes those who have modest growing space/capabilities. Not everyone is able to grow on more than a backyard patch or container grouping, and I love how this holiday recognizes the value (inside and out) of *everyone*'s activity.
My family will be visiting that day, so it is the perfect opportunity to cook together with the herbs and other plants in my garden, and all the produce I'm getting from my CSA. No idea what we'll make, but that's part of the fun of this time of year.
I so agree. I love that it recognizes everyone who is trying to grow their own and about sharing the food and the experience.
This time of year is perfect for having fun with ingredients – it's such an abundant time. I love it.
