As you know from my last post, the Citycenter Danbury Farmer’s Market is now open for business every Friday until the end of October. While I couldn’t make it to the market for the opening “bell ringing,” I did swing by later in the day. Needless to say, we filled our reusable shopping bags to the brim: bell peppers, three kinds of summer squash, corn, snap peas, broccoli rabe, fingerling potatoes, onions, cabbage and peaches!
We wasted no time digging in to our farmer’s market finds. To compliment our grilled pork cutlets on Friday night, we also grilled up an onion, bell pepper and some of the fingerling potatoes. Just olive oil, salt & pepper. So simple and so good.
For dessert – we grilled a few of the peaches and topped them with sliced almonds, local honey and some homemade fudge crumbles. It was so good we forgot to take a photo!
What did you find at your farmer’s market this weekend that’s noteworthy?
I haven't made it to the Danbury market, but I'd like to go soon. Fingerling potatoes, wow. I wouldn't have expected them so early. The snap peas and broccoli too… So many options for meals!
I've been going to the farmers' markets and some of the farms to pick veg: right now its a lot of zucchini and squash, lots of greens (chard, lettuce mixes, choy, etc), and the starts of the baby beets. Cucumbers too…. and in the fruits – the peaches are cling-stone, but they are here! Plums, nectarines – I love them all.
I know I was surprised to find the fingerlings. I think it was pretty much the last of the broccoli rabe and snap peas. I love it all too! Such easy, good eating in the summer.
