National Farmers’ Market Week is August 2 – 8!

To celebrate, the CT Commissioner of Agriculture has issued a challenge to all Connecticut residents: For one week eat at least one CT Grown item each day!

Okay, for many of us that doesn’t seem like too big a challenge. However, I love the goal of the CT Grown Challenge, to get more people to discover the amazing flavors available in our small state.

As it stated in the Dept. of Ag. press release: Commissioner Prelli said, “I am committing to purchasing locally grown fruits and vegetables, personally, but encourage consumers to seek out CT Grown meats, cheeses, milk, honey, maple syrup, jams and jellies, and specialty foods as well. With so many options to choose from, it is easy to find something CT Grown suited to just about every taste bud.”

Seriously, I couldn’t have said it better myself!

The CT Grown Challenge is part of a larger Eat Local Challenge involving state Departments of Agriculture throughout the country, spearheaded by Secretary Roger Allbee in Vermont. Each participating state’s challenge varies in the specifics, but all share the common theme of promoting fresh, healthy foods and instilling community-wide appreciation of local farmers and their products.

So in honor of our hard-working local farmers, let’s do it Connecticut! Feel free to share the CT Grown items you ate as part of the challenge as a comment on this post.
